Despite talking tons of shit on Mediafire, I used it to Upload Our Turn stuff for Hunter. Out Turn is one of the best Hardcore bands period. This has the EP, the demo, the Embrace cover (hidden track) and their comp tracks.

This is one of my favorite pictures of myself at a show. The show itself was nothing special. In some ways it actually kind of sucked, I had to yell at a kid for not showing basic respect to those around him, a friend of mine nearly got in a fight, and there was a ton of generally obnoxious people there. However, this picture sums up everything I love about Hardcore. I’m on the right sharing a laugh with Hunter while Birdbrain (a band I’d never heard of before that night) is raging away. Sometimes Hardcore doesn’t need to be profound. Sometimes it really is just as simple as hanging out with your friends and watching a band that makes it special.

Just made a ‘Short List’ of releases that could be in my top then this year. I ended up with 51 things. Maybe I should just do top ten Demos, LPs and EPs as separate lists. I’m blown away by how much good music has come out this year, and a little surprised by how many things are demos by new bands.

Every year I feel like I'm not keeping up with new music until I try and make a list of that year's top ten releases.

98% of folk punk is unlistenable garbage. Defiance, Ohio is part of the two percent that doesn’t suck. This is all the non LP stuff up to but not including the new EP. This also has three live sets. Odds are there are tracks in here you’re missing. As I mentioned last post, I’m a little burnt out on posting music on here (I’ve posted over 100 things), but I uploaded this a week or two ago, so I should probably post it.

108 - Rarities:

I’ve been running out of steam again lately when it comes to the music uploads, so I’m not going to do much of a write up for this one or the next, but I uploaded them a week ago so it would be waste not to post them.

This batch of 108 rarities includes the following:

- A Misfits cover not included on the 2 disc discog that Equal Vision released. I heard this recording many years before I knew or cared who 108 was. The whole tribute it’s on is sick. Even the Pennywise song… seriously!

- Two live sets, one of them has a 7 minutes version of ‘No Spiritual Surrender’. So sick!!

- The spoken word tape. this is listenable, and I turned it off twenty minutes in. 108 was great, but I can’t get down with getting preached at about Krishna for an hour and a half. I’m including it because it’s kind of awesome that band would care enough about their message to record and release a spoken word tape. I’m also including it so see if anyone can get through the whole thing.

Fun Fact; 108 is named after the number of beads on prayer bead garlands.

Godspeed You! Black Emperor - Peel Sessions and Comp Track:

I mentioned the other day that the new Godspeed You! Black Emperor was going to give the new Propagandhi a run for it’s money for album of the year.

In celebration of that I figured I’d post some non-album GYBE tracks for anyone who wants to hear more stuff they may not have heard before. This post is for folks who are already fans of the band, if you want to get into them I suggest the Slow Riot for a new Zero Kanada EP. It is monumental, and I feel like fans of any style of music can at least appreciate it.

I had wanted to post the Peel Sessions and the track from Song of the Silent Land comp as well as their set from last time they played Vancouver since a lot of my friends were there. Unfortunately, there wasn’t room for all that. Any Vancouver friends who want that recording, let me know and I’ll point you to it. The Peel Sessions is a song that I’ve never seen anywhere else, even in their plethora of bootleg recordings, and it’s awesome! The comp track is simply called “outro” and it was taken from a live set. Both tracks are essential listening if you’re a fan and don’t have them.

I’d also like to say that I feel it’s a disservice to call Godspeed You! Black Emporer a “post-rock” band, because you’re either giving other bands too much credit or not giving Godspeed enough.

Godspeed - Swimmer's Ear EP (Skip and Jay from Turning Point):

It’s often overlooked that Skip Candelori was in a couple of great bands after Turning Point. Part of that has to do with just how incredible (later) Turning Point was, and part of it is that Godspeed and Memorial Day didn’t sounds a whole lot like Turning Point. That said, it’s not that much of a departure from the final Turning Point recordings, it’s slowed down and more melodic and Skip’s become a bit of a better singer. I’m listening to the EP right now, and it’s really hard to describe. Maybe a cross between 90’s Indie bands like Braid or Superchunk and and some of the more rock oriented projects that 80’s Hardcore folks did like Quicksand or Earth is Flat era Supertouch.

Also of note, the demo by Skip’s final band, Memorial Day, is apparently going to see a proper release soon. I e-mailed the guy who’s putting it out for details, and if I don’t hear back I’ll probably just post the recordings here.
