At this point, The SST catalog seems to only have two types of records, “classics” (Black Flag, Husker Du, Minutemen, Descendents, Dinosaur Jr, Sonic Youth, etc…) and stuff that no one seems to have heard of (Lawndale, Leaving Trains, Tom Troccelli’s Dog, Fatso Jetson etc…). For some reason the Minuteflag EP seems to be to be largely forgotten, or possibly just ignored.
This four song EP was recorded in 1985 by all members of the Minutemen and Black Flag. It’s mostly instrumental, with the exception of the first track which has D. Boon on lead vocals and Rollins signing back up.
It sounds like a really wild version of Process of Weeding Out. It’s not as heavy, but it is way stranger. It does sound a little more like the Minutemen then Black Flag, but the presence of both bands is obvious.
A couple interesting points about this release: It was recorded in ‘85, but the bands agreed not to release it until one of the two bands had broken up. D. Boon died in a car wreck about 6 months after it was recorded, ending the Minutemen, and Black Flag broke up about a year later. Also, this is one of the few SST releases that they have allowed to go out of print, although I’m not sure why.
